"Serious
and extraordinary work...What is unique about this is that this
sextet features the unique instrumentation of alto & contrabass
clarinets (both rare clarinets for soloists), a bazantar (hybrid
5-string bass with 29 sympathetic strings & 4 drone strings)
or sitar and cello with electronics, piano, voice and percussion...a
sublime and mesmerizing blend. Absolutely riveting. Y'All does
it again."

OMEGATHORP:
Living City documents a September 2002 Merkin Hall performance,
co-led by multi-reedist/composer JD
Parran and string player/composer Mark
Deutsch, which featured Parran’s four-part composition
of the same name. Both musicians were born and raised in St.
Louis, and began collaborating there in 1999.Parran’s
piece, a chamber work for voice and instrumental quintet, was
conceived as a musical setting of the late saxophonist/composer
Glenn Spearman’s poem, “EAGLE FLYERS, MAMBO SAMBA”,
and evokes the imagery of a universal city. The work was written
with Deutsch’s Bazantar in mind, and the instrument’s
unique sound heavily influenced the modal nature of the composition,
which also features vocalist Thomas Buckner reading and singing
Spearman’s words. Also spotlighting the Bazantar is Deutsch’s
“Kwama Okura,” a 24-minute showcase of his compositional
vision of weaving together Indian music’s sublime melodic
contouring, the panoramic architecture of classical music, universal
mathematical principles, a jazz musician’s commitment
to spontaneous creation, and the folk tradition’s graceful
simplicity to create a musical gestalt that defies categorization.
