Omegathorp: Living City

JD PARRAN & MARK DEUTSCH

Omegathorp: Living City
"Serious and extraordinary work...What is unique about this is that this sextet features the unique instrumentation of alto & contrabass clarinets (both rare clarinets for soloists), a bazantar (hybrid 5-string bass with 29 sympathetic strings & 4 drone strings) or sitar and cello with electronics, piano, voice and percussion...a sublime and mesmerizing blend. Absolutely riveting. Y'All does it again."

Vignettes in the Spirit of Ellington

ME, WE and THEM ORCHESTRA

Vignettes in the Spirit of Ellington
"This is a sonically gorgeous recording. James Jabbo Ware beautifully orchestrates, exploiting the colors of the various instruments to their fullest and frames the great soloists in different ways from solo spot to solo spot."

SOMETHING
IS COMING

ME, WE and THEM ORCHESTRA

SOMETHING IS COMING
“...Couterpoint, meter shifts, tempo changes, dissonant harmonies, collective improvisation, and more are combined in a virtuosic manipulation of musical resources by a composer whose excellence has been recognized by grants from a number of prestigious arts organizations.”

-David Franklin (Cadence Aug. 2002)

TODAY'S MOVE

ME, WE and THEM ORCHESTRA
Today’s Move
“...lapping textures that shimmer and mesmerize and kick and roar sometimes in rapid succession, sometimes all at once. Even as it throws some fascinating curves, it stays accessible because it's visceral; its basic contours seem familiar, not forbidding. And it’s smooth and sweet and funky and witty.”

-Gene Santoro (PULSE! - Oct. 1992)

J.D. PARRAN
& Spirit Stage

J.D. PARRAN & Spirit Stage
Featuring the Poetry of Shirley LeFlore.
Artistically, Shirley and J.D. are products of MidSouth culture: that human flow from DeepSouth. During the civil rights era they participated in the development of the St. Louis Black Artists Group (BAG) which was active throughout the late 60’s.
Inspired by their many shared performances, J.D. formed Spirit Stage in order to express this continuum in the 1990’s, pickin’ cotton and tobacco, praising God, stylin’, partyin’, or groovin’ to blues, jazz and world music.

HAROLD ASHBY
Plays Duke Ellington

Harold Ashby Plays Duke Ellington
“...one can almost picture - and hear - Ellington’s band wailing behind him as Ashby frames his quavering, soulful choruses. In other words, he plays the tenor Ellington-style. Ashby and his co-workers have no trouble making the ride a pleasure no matter how slowly the wheels are turning. Everyone works wonderfully together...”

-Jack Bowers (Cadence - April 2002)

Harold Ashby became a permanent member of the Duke Ellington band on July 5, 1968 and stayed with the band through “the last tour”, playing concerts in the Fall of ’73 at Westminster Abbey and for the Queen of England in London, England and in Addis Ababa, Africa for his Imperial Highness, Emperor Hallie Selassie.
